When you are invited to a cocktail party the first thing to remember is that as you know cocktail parties are a standing up event that can go on for quite some hours and you have to think of your feet. So on this occasion you have to dress from your feet upwards and the first choice is select a comfortable pair of shoes. To be elegant they need to have some sort of a heel, but unless you are used to wearing heels, don’t opt for one that is too high or else your legs are really going to take the strain all evening. Nowadays some high heel shoes have a cushioned pad inside them for the where the ball of your foot goes and this helps quite a bit. Now it’s time to choose between a dress, a trouser suit or a skirt and blouse. Well the easiest is always the little black dress which if very simple you can dress up with accessories or if it’s something intricate like a black lace dress it is probably best left alone as much as possible. A black trouser suit in let’s say satin or raw silk worn with a soft white blouse with folds also looks very elegant and finally you could choose a navy velvet skirt with a white silk blouse and a cerise cummerbund type belt. The last thing to think about is your hand bag and here again you have to think about what happens at a cocktail party. You usually have to hold a glass in one hand and a piece of food in the other, every now and then, and so you really don’t have a spare hand to carry a bag on your wrist or a clutch bag in your hand. So a must is to choose a small shoulder bag with an elegant chain and keep it on your shoulder. That way you have your hands free to eat and drink.
